Beyond the Classroom
The Arabic program invites students to enhance their coursework through an array of activities such as art exhibits, concerts, film festivals, lecture series, independent research, and study abroad.
All Arabic majors are encouraged to spend time in the Middle East, whether for a full academic year, a semester, or even a summer. Many students find education abroad to be a transformational experience, and say immersion is the best way to build fluency and cultural understanding.
"My experience in Jordan was instrumental in bettering my Arabic and broadening my worldview."—Matthew Kent ’13
Academic year study abroad programs are available through Notre Dame International. NDI creates and oversees programs that enable students to undertake coursework, research, internships, and service in diverse regions around the world. The primary study abroad program for Arabic students is in Amman, Jordan.
Study Abroad in Amman, Jordan
Princess Sumaya University of Technology Council for International Education Exchange
The city of Amman provides a safe environment for exploration and study. Amman, the capital of Jordan with at least 5,000 years of history, is a fascinating city of contrasts—a unique blend of old and new, situated on a hilly area between the desert and the fertile Jordan Valley.
Students can choose from a semester or year-long program designed for students interested in following one of three tracks: Arabic language, Arabic language and culture, or diplomacy and policy studies. Enrollment in certain courses may require a higher level of proficiency in Arabic than others.
Students can live with a Jordanian host family or in an apartment with other CIEE students. There are volunteer options available to engage with the community, from helping others with English to volunteering at a women’s rights organization. Academic year students can participate in an internship with a non-governmental organization.
Summer Language Abroad (SLA)
A program of Notre Dame's Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures, Summer Language Abroad offers grants of up to $5,500 for students to complete an intensive curriculum in their chosen country, coupled with real-life language use and structured opportunities for community engagement.
