Catherine Bronson

Biography

Catherine Bronson is an Assistant Teaching Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies. She specializes in Arabic pedagogy, Islamic intellectual thought, the religious traditions of the late-antique Near East, and gender constructions in Islam. Her research and publications focus on how the interpretation and formulation of the Qur’an during the formative period of Islam influenced doctrine, culture, and civilization. Her monograph, Islamic Selves of Eve, is forthcoming, with an intended publication date in 2025.
In addition to teaching all levels of Arabic and select courses on Islam, Catherine has been the supervisor for Notre Dame’s Fulbright Teaching Assistants since 2015, in coordination with The Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures. She also serves as the liaison for the tutoring program, selecting and coordinating tutors each year to assist with language programs.
She also served as the director of the Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures (MELC) initiative from 2019 until it evolved into the Middle Eastern and North African Studies program.
Catherine also served as a co-editor for the Review of Qur'anic Research (RQR), a key resource in International Qur’anic Studies that featured reviews of recent publications in Qur’anic scholarship and related fields, including monographs, reference works, and translations.
