Li Guo

Biography

Li Guo’s areas of interest are Arabic language and literature, medieval Arabic documents, historiography, and popular culture. He is the author of Early Mamluk Syrian Historiography: Al-Yunini’s Dhayl Mir’at al-zaman (Brill, 1998) and Commerce, Culture, and Community in a Red Sea Port in the Thirteenth Century: The Arabic documents of Quseir (Brill, 2004). His third book, The Performing Arts in Medieval Islam: Shadow play and popular poetry in Ibn Daniyal’s Mamluk Cairo (Brill, 2012), is the winner of the IIM Prize for Research in the category « New conceptual tools », Institut International de la Marionnette, France, 2015. Li Guo’s most recent monograph, Arabic Shadow Theatre 1300-1900, was published in Brill’s series Handbook of Oriental Studies (HdO, v. 143) in 2020.

Li Guo’s research is sponsored by fellowships from The American Research Center in Egypt (1998-1999, 2014-2015), American Council of Learned Societies (2002-2003), and National Endowment for the Humanities (2008-2009). Li Guo is a co-editor of Brill’s series Studies on Performing Arts and Literature in the Islamicate World.

At Notre Dame, Li Guo has taught Arabic language at all levels and has offered courses such as Introduction to Islamic Civilization, The Arabian Nights, The Arabic Literary Heritage, and Marriage and Family in Muslim Societies.
