“I accomplished far more than I thought possible in the short time I was abroad,” said Arabic and philosophy Jacob Kildoo, who spent the summer in Muscat, Oman. “Over the course of five weeks, I interacted with my Omani professors constantly in Arabic; I spoke Arabic in restaurants, barbershops, stores, taxis, and on the streets.

Through intensive coursework and cultural engagement, Jacob and other students in Notre Dame’s Summer Language Abroad program have been able to advance their language skills by as much as two full semesters in just one unforgettable summer. The program provides grants of up to $5,500 through the Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures.

“The whole experience was truly a fantastic way to learn. I hope that I can continue to use intercultural experiences and foreign language acquisition to make myself a more well-rounded person.”
